ABOUT THE PROJECT

Alloy Wheels Direct appointed Orion Byte to help with a site migration when moving to a new website build.

It had built up a strong organic presence over many years, meaning that losing any of this traffic as a result of the migration was a big risk, which would have a significant impact.

Our primary goal was to provide Technical SEO consultancy to retain traffic levels during the migration process and improve them following it.

The Strategy

We joined the project early in the development, which gave both Orion Byte and Alloy Wheels Direct the chance to handle the website migration carefully and with less risk.

  • We gave clear advice and recommended not making too many changes at once. This way, if there were any drops in performance, we could easily figure out why.
  • To protect the site’s search rankings, we kept changes to the URL paths as small as possible during the move from the old site to the new one.
We also set clear rules for handling content and advised against adding or removing large amounts of content during the migration.
  • Using our custom-built tool, Fuzzzy, we accurately managed most of the redirects, which saved a lot of time in creating the redirect map.
  • We did a detailed technical audit of the old site to spot and fix past issues, making sure they wouldn’t carry over to the new version. This was possible because we got involved early in the process.
  • As with most website migrations, the project took longer than expected, but this gave both Impression and Alloy Wheels Direct the time to properly plan and cover everything — both technically and content-wise. By preparing well in advance, we were ready to support the team at every important stage.
